Is it worth repairing yourself?
It is usually not worth repairing an iPhone screen yourself for a number of reasons. We’ve found that iPhone screen assemblies are fairly expensive, especially since regular consumers can’t get wholesale discounts. When looking at the parts cost plus the tool kit, it is nearly the cost of the repair at a reputable shop. A basic tool repair kit from iFixit is about $30. In some situations, it costs more to repair the iPhone screen yourself than to have it repaired at Apple.
We have found that on average across all iPhone models, it is 8.7% more expensive to repair your iPhone screen yourself versus repairing at a 3rd party repair shop. This considers part cost and tool cost from iFixit. Though if you already have the necessary tools to repair your screen, it will be 14.5% cheaper to repair on your own.
Additionally, repairing the screen requires disassembly of your iPhone which can be damaged in the process. We surveyed 17 cell phone repair shop owners and their employees and 100% said they’ve damaged a phone in the past during repair. Seeing this data, it is best to avoid repairing an iPhone screen yourself as even repair shop techs can accidentally damage a phone. It’s best to leave it up to the professionals which have a warranty in case of an accident.

Getting your iPhone repaired through Apple is probably the most reliable and safest place to get your iPhone screen repaired. Though there have been some privacy issues in the past. Apple offers carry-in service by visiting a local Apple store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Mobile onsite repair is also an option. An Apple Authorized Service Provider can come to your home or office to repair your iPhone screen. Onsite services are only available at select locations and have an additional travel fee. Lastly, Apple also offers mail-in repair. Apple will send you a box with pre-paid shipping labels and then you can ship your iPhone for repair.
However, iPhone screen repair costs are usually higher at Apple than at most 3rd party repair shops. On the contrary, you are guaranteed a quality repair and a solid warranty against any potential issues. We’ve found iPhone screen repairs to be 17.2% more expensive on average at Apple versus other well-known 3rd party repair shops. However, when looking only at the 13 series iPhone, repair costs are surprisingly 50% cheaper at Apple than at other 3rd party repair shops. This is usually the case with newer devices as prices will come down over the next several months.
Additionally, Apple repairs tend to be a bit slower than your local mom-and-pop repair shops. Apple iPhone screen repairs usually are completed the same day within a couple of hours. In some cases, your device may need to be sent out to a service center for additional repairs.

Apple authorized service providers are businesses that have been thoroughly vetted and approved by Apple. Third-Party Phone Repair Shop
Another alternative to repair your iPhone screen is at a local 3rd party repair shop. Third-party repair shops are shops outside of Apple and Apple authorized service centers. This includes your local mom-and-pop cell phone repair shops and larger franchises such as Batteries Plus, uBreakifix, and CPR. These shops will usually use aftermarket or refurbished screens however, OEM parts are sometimes available. We recommend asking what type of part will be installed on your device. This way you can effectively compare prices with Apple. Be sure to research and look at online reviews before choosing a cell phone repair shop to get your device repaired.
Costs will vary from store to store as most third-party cell phone repair shops are independently owned and operated. Depending on your iPhone model, screen repair costs range as low as $59.99 all the way up to $449.99. You can expect most screen repairs to be completed within 30 minutes. Though we recommend setting aside at least an hour for the whole process.
Warranties also differ from store to store. We found that CPR has the longest warranty with a whopping lifetime limited warranty. However, not all CPR locations are participating in the lifetime warranty. uBreakifix on the other hand, states they offer a 1-year warranty. And Batteries Plus offers only a 6-month warranty.
